Inclusive design in hospitality: from compliance to real usability

Accessibility in hospitality is often approached as a regulatory requirement. At the same time, it directly affects how spaces function in everyday use.

Globally, approximately 15% of the population lives with some form of disability . In tourism, this rarely concerns individual travellers only. Travel decisions often involve companions, families, or groups, which increases the overall relevance for hospitality providers.

Despite this, accessibility is still primarily associated with physical adaptations — step-free access, lifts, or wheelchair-accessible rooms.

In practice, however, accessibility extends far beyond mobility. It influences how guests perceive space, orient themselves, and interact with their surroundings — and therefore directly impacts usability, comfort, and overall experience.

Accessibility beyond mobility

While accessibility is still predominantly associated with physical access, a wide range of factors influence how people actually experience and use space.

Many of these factors are not immediately visible. They include visual and auditory impairments, neurodivergence (such as autism or ADHD), chronic illness, and sensory sensitivities related to light, sound, temperature, or spatial complexity.

These conditions affect how users process information, maintain orientation, and interact with their surroundings. In unfamiliar environments such as hotels, this becomes particularly relevant.

Rather than being defined solely by access, accessibility is closely linked to how intuitively a space can be perceived and understood — and how much effort is required to use it.

A broader understanding of accessibility

Inclusive design considers the interaction between people and their environment across multiple dimensions. 

Beyond physical access, this includes:

Spatial orientation and navigation

Clarity and legibility of information

Sensory conditions (light, sound, materials)

Cognitive load and ease of use in space

Inclusive design within existing standards

These aspects are not outside the scope of existing standards. They are already embedded in various frameworks used across the built environment and hospitality sector.

Green building systems such as LEED, DGNB, and WELL address user comfort and indoor environmental quality. The GSTC criteria for sustainable tourism explicitly refer not only to access, but also to the availability and reliability of information. On a broader level, accessibility is part of the social dimension within ESG and directly linked to SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).

Despite this, implementation in hospitality environments remains uneven.

What current data reveals

Available data from the global hotel sector indicates that accessibility measures are heavily concentrated on mobility-related adaptations.

In a large-scale analysis covering more than 30,000 hotels across major global destinations, the most common features relate to wheelchair access and basic physical infrastructure. In contrast, measures supporting sensory accessibility — such as Braille, tactile signage, or auditory guidance — are present only in a small percentage of cases .

This suggests that accessibility is often addressed in a partial way. A property may be described as accessible, while only covering a limited range of user needs.

Accessibility in practice

The implications of this approach become visible in everyday use.

Many barriers in hospitality environments are not immediately apparent, particularly for users who do not experience them directly. However, they significantly affect usability.

Interior design is one example. Monochromatic spaces — for instance, white walls combined with white doors and minimal contrast — can make orientation difficult for people with visual impairments.

Transparent elements present another challenge. Glass partitions or doors without clear markings may be difficult to perceive, especially in varying light conditions, creating both usability issues and safety risks.

Wayfinding is often underestimated. In large or complex layouts, the absence of clear visual, tactile, or auditory cues can make navigation unnecessarily demanding. This is particularly relevant for guests who rely on predictable spatial structures or reduced cognitive load.

Acoustic environments also play a role. High levels of background noise, reverberation, or unclear sound distribution can affect communication and overall comfort, not only for people with hearing impairments.

Finally, accessibility is strongly influenced by information. Inaccurate or incomplete descriptions of facilities, particularly on booking platforms, create a mismatch between expectations and reality. For many users, this represents one of the most significant barriers when planning travel.

Practical implications for hospitality environments

From a design and operational perspective, accessibility is often determined by details that go beyond formal requirements.

In guest areas, this includes:

  • sufficient visual contrast between surfaces
  • clear marking of transparent elements
  • consistent and legible signage
  • intuitive spatial organisation

In guest rooms, usability depends not only on dimensions, but also on how elements are arranged and accessed:

  • placement of switches, controls, and interfaces
  • clarity of bathroom layouts
  • availability of both visual and auditory signals

Operational aspects are equally relevant:

  • accuracy and transparency of information provided online
  • staff awareness and ability to respond to different needs
  • consistency between communicated features and actual conditions

Many of these measures do not require complex interventions. They require a broader understanding of accessibility and its integration into both design and day-to-day operations.

Conclusion

Hospitality environments are designed to accommodate diverse users with different expectations, abilities, and needs.

When accessibility is addressed only partially, these environments may meet formal requirements while still limiting how they are actually used.

Inclusive design does not introduce a new layer of complexity. It reflects the complexity that already exists in how people experience space — and requires it to be considered more consistently.
