Preparing hotels and hospitality organisations for recognised sustainability certifications
Sustainability certification consulting supports hotels and tourism organisations in preparing for recognised hospitality certifications such as GSTC, EU Ecolabel, Green Key, EarthCheck and Green Sign, as well as green building certifications such as LEED, WELL, DGNB and BREEAM, and management-system standards such as ISO 14001.
Sustainability certifications support credibility, transparency and structured improvement in hospitality organisations. However, successful certification requires operational implementation of processes, governance and documentation.
HOLITRA supports hotels and hospitality organisations in preparing for recognised sustainability certifications (e.g. GSTC, EU Ecolabel) — forming the Certifications pillar of the HOLITRA Hospitality Sustainability System — ensuring that organisational structures, processes and sustainability initiatives are aligned with certification requirements and industry expectations.
HOW IT WORKS
Scope of certification consulting
01
Certification scheme review
Assessment of relevant sustainability certification schemes for hotels and hospitality organisations.
02
Operational alignment
Alignment of operational practices and organisational structures with certification requirements.
03
Documentation & policies
Preparation of documentation, policies and internal processes required for certification.
04
Cross-portfolio coordination
Coordination of certification preparation across properties, departments or portfolios.
05
Audit guidance
Strategic guidance and support throughout the certification and audit preparation process.
01
Energy, water and emissions
The consumption records, meter readings and calculation basis an auditor will ask to see — and whether they cover the period the scheme requires.
02
Waste and food waste
Waste contracts, separation evidence and disposal records, in the form the scheme expects rather than as an internal note.
03
Procurement and suppliers
A purchasing policy and the supplier evidence behind it — one of the criteria properties most often discover they cannot document.
04
Building and technical systems
Which green building scheme fits the asset — LEED, DGNB or BREEAM — and how it runs alongside operational certification rather than instead of it.
05
People and workplace
The social criteria every recognised scheme contains: employment practice, training records, equal treatment and local employment.
06
Guests and communication
Recognised schemes require that promotional material is accurate and promises no more than the property delivers — the same duty EU law now places on every hotel.
THE SIX AREAS
Areas certification preparation covers
Certification is an evidence exercise. These are the six areas an audit examines — and where preparation either produces the records or discovers they were never kept.

FAQs
Sustainability certification consulting for hospitality
Sustainability certification consulting supports hotels and tourism organisations in preparing for recognised hospitality certifications such as GSTC, EU Ecolabel, Green Key, EarthCheck and Green Sign, as well as green building certifications such as LEED, WELL, DGNB and BREEAM, and management-system standards such as ISO 14001. It typically covers selecting the relevant certification scheme, aligning operations with its requirements, preparing documentation and policies, and coordinating audit readiness across properties or departments.
Certification preparation at HOLITRA covers six areas: energy, water and emissions; waste and food waste; procurement and suppliers; the building and its technical systems; people and workplace; and guest communication. Every recognised scheme asks about all six — properties are usually strong on energy and weakest on procurement and on proving that their promotional claims are accurate.
Hotels are evaluated against the GSTC criteria by an independent, GSTC-Accredited Certification Body, such as Control Union or Vireo. The process typically includes a documentation review (desk assessment) followed by an on-site audit, and certification is generally granted for a three-year cycle. HOLITRA supports hotels in preparing for each stage of this process.
GSTC (Global Sustainable Tourism Council) is the leading international standard for sustainable tourism, recognised by UNWTO and used as the reference baseline for many other certification and ecolabel schemes relevant to hospitality, including Green Key, EarthCheck and GreenSign. HOLITRA’s certification expertise is grounded in personally held professional accreditations: team members are GSTC-Accredited Auditors and ISO 14001 Lead Auditors, Accredited Professionals for LEED, WELL and ÖGNI, and official consultants for the EU Ecolabel and the Austrian Ecolabel — bringing direct, audit-side experience to certification preparation, not only consulting-side knowledge.
Yes. While GSTC is HOLITRA’s primary area of audit expertise, the same preparation approach — gap analysis, documentation and operational alignment — applies across other recognised schemes, including the EU Ecolabel, Austrian Ecolabel, Green Key, ISO 14001 and green building certifications such as LEED or BREEAM. Validity periods vary by scheme. HOLITRA helps hotels choose the certification(s) most relevant to their market and guests, and prepares them objectively for whichever scheme fits best — always as part of one connected Hospitality Sustainability System, not isolated preparation.
