Ensuring long-term sustainability performance and measurable impact
Continuous improvement is the ongoing process of monitoring sustainability performance, reviewing KPIs, and adapting strategies and operational practices as regulatory, market and organisational conditions evolve.
Sustainability is not a one-time initiative but an ongoing organisational process. Maintaining progress requires continuous monitoring, regular evaluation and the ability to adapt strategies and operational practices as expectations evolve.
HOLITRA supports hospitality organisations in establishing structures for continuous improvement — guided by the Stability–Improvement Framework, the pillar that connects every other part of the HOLITRA Hospitality Sustainability System — including performance monitoring, KPIs, ESG and reporting systems, ensuring that sustainability strategies remain effective, measurable and aligned with changing regulatory, market and organisational contexts.
HOW IT WORKS
Scope of continuous improvement support
01
Ongoing monitoring
Regular monitoring and evaluation of sustainability performance and KPIs.
02
Strategy review
Review and optimisation of sustainability strategies and operational practices.
03
New opportunities
Identification of new improvement opportunities across hotel operations.
04
Regulatory adaptation
Adaptation to evolving regulatory, market and operational requirements.
05
Ongoing guidance
Ongoing guidance and support for maintaining and improving sustainability performance systems.
01
Energy, water and emissions
Monthly review of deviations, payback tracked measure by measure, and a new baseline after every technical change — so a good month is not mistaken for a trend.
02
Waste and food waste
Quarterly review against the reduction target, and a fresh measurement whenever the menu, the season or the buffet concept changes.
03
Procurement and suppliers
An annual supplier review, criteria tightened as the market allows, and a decision on suppliers that have not moved in three years.
04
Building and technical systems
Building KPIs kept under review and checked against what new plant was promised to deliver — the gap between specification and reality is usually found here.
05
People and workplace
Whether the routines still hold after a season of staff turnover, and a refresher cycle for the departments where they did not.
06
Guests and communication
A seasonal re-check of every sustainability claim and campaign, so what the property says stays true as suppliers, measures and regulation change.
THE SIX AREAS
Areas continuous improvement covers
Not everything should be improved. Some practices need to become stable enough to survive a change of staff; others have real headroom. These are the six areas where that distinction gets made, season after season.

FAQs
Continuous Improvement for hospitality sustainability
Continuous improvement is the ongoing process of monitoring sustainability performance, reviewing KPIs, and adapting strategies and operational practices as regulatory, market and organisational conditions evolve. At HOLITRA, this is guided by the Stability–Improvement Framework, which distinguishes between practices that need to become stable and consistent, and practices that should be actively improved.
Continuous improvement at HOLITRA covers six areas: energy, water and emissions; waste and food waste; procurement and suppliers; the building and its technical systems; people and workplace; and guest communication. Each area is reviewed on its own rhythm — energy monthly, waste quarterly, suppliers annually — and for each one the question is the same: has this become stable enough to leave alone, or is there still headroom worth working on?
Continuous improvement is, by design, an ongoing, retained advisory relationship rather than a single project. HOLITRA supports hospitality organisations through regular monitoring cycles, performance reviews and structured guidance over time — distinct from one-off engagements such as an initial assessment or certification preparation.
The Stability–Improvement Framework is HOLITRA’s approach to balancing two needs in hospitality sustainability: stabilising practices that already work well, using the SDCA cycle (Standardize–Do–Check–Act), and actively improving areas with potential, using the PDCA cycle (Plan–Do–Check–Act). It helps hotels avoid both stagnation and disruptive over-change.
Continuous improvement is the mechanism that keeps certifications valid and reporting credible over time. Recertification audits — for example under GSTC or ISO 14001 — and recurring ESG reports both rely on consistently maintained processes, which is why continuous improvement is the domain that connects all others within the HOLITRA Hospitality Sustainability System.
