Hotel sustainability certification: the right scheme, prepared on evidence
Hotel sustainability certification is an independent, third-party confirmation that a hotel’s operation meets the criteria of a recognised sustainability scheme — covering environmental performance, social practices, purchasing, guest communication and the way sustainability is managed.
Schemes differ in scope, recognition, effort and audience: some are known to guests and booking platforms, some are requested by corporate clients or tour operators, some are national labels with strong local recognition. HOLITRA helps you choose the scheme that fits and prepares your property or group for the audit, as part of Certification & Standards and the Standards & Certifications pillar of the HOLITRA Hospitality Sustainability System. HOLITRA prepares; independent certification bodies certify.

CERTIFICATION SCHEMES
Which scheme fits your hotel?
The right scheme depends on who should recognise it: guests, booking platforms, corporate clients, tour operators or your own market. Compare them first in the Certification Toolkit, or let us check it with you.
GSTC certification
Certification directly against the GSTC Criteria by a GSTC-accredited certification body: the international reference point.
GSTC-recognised labels
Standards such as GreenSign or the Austrian Ecolabel, recognised by GSTC as equivalent to its criteria.
EU Ecolabel
The EU’s official ecolabel for tourist accommodation, focused on environmental performance.
Green Key & other schemes
International programmes such as Green Key or EarthCheck, and schemes requested by specific partners.
WHY HOLITRA
Why HOLITRA for hotel sustainability certification
HOLITRA combines hospitality-specific sustainability expertise with the qualified specialists required by the scope of the project.
Built specifically for hospitality
We translate scheme criteria into hotel reality: rooms, kitchens, laundry, technical systems, suppliers and seasonal teams.
Scheme-neutral advice
We compare schemes on what they do for your hotel and recommend the one that fits. HOLITRA does not certify the hotels it advises.
Audit-side experience
GSTC auditor · ISO 14001 Lead Auditor. Evidence prepared the way auditors test it.
One connected system across disciplines
The same evidence serves the certification, ESG reporting and green claims: prepared once, used consistently.

FAQs
Hotel Sustainability Certification
An independent, third-party confirmation that a hotel’s operation meets the criteria of a recognised sustainability scheme. Depending on the scheme, it covers environmental performance such as energy, water and waste, social practices, purchasing, guest communication and the way sustainability is managed. The certificate is issued by an independent certification body or scheme operator after an audit.
No. The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) does not certify hotels itself. It sets the GSTC Criteria, accredits certification bodies and recognises standards that are equivalent to its criteria. A hotel is certified by a GSTC-accredited certification body, such as Control Union, either directly against the GSTC Criteria or against a GSTC-recognised standard.
Recognition applies to a standard: GSTC has confirmed that its criteria are equivalent to the GSTC Criteria. Austrian Ecolabel and GreenSign are examples. Accreditation applies to a certification body: GSTC has verified that its certification process is competent and impartial. Recognition of a standard alone does not guarantee a reliable certification process; accreditation of the certification body does.
GSTC certification, GSTC-recognised standards such as GreenSign and the Austrian Ecolabel, the EU Ecolabel for tourist accommodation, Green Key, EarthCheck and other recognised hotel schemes. For buildings, see green building certification; for environmental management systems, see ISO 14001 and EMAS.
It depends on who should recognise it: guests and booking platforms, corporate clients and tour operators, or your local market. Budget, the number of properties and your starting point matter too. The HOLITRA Certification Toolkit helps you compare the options; a first conversation narrows them down to the scheme that fits.
It depends on the scheme and the certification body. Most schemes require periodic re-audits, surveillance or annual reporting to keep the certificate valid. We plan that cycle with you from the start, so recertification is not a new project every time.
